When doing a construction or renovation project, it may become necessary to remove sections of concrete, asphalt paving or large rocks.
In this situation, you need to use an electric jack hammer to break up the material into pieces where it can be more easily removed. A jack hammer works by driving an internal “hammer” up and down either through the power of compressed air, hydraulics or an electric motor. And they can do this around 1500 times per minute, making short work of concrete or asphalt.

Types of Jack Hammer.
There are essentially two types. The first is a pneumatic jack hammer, which is powered by compressed air and delivers intense impact, these are generally extremely heavy duty and only used on major construction sites or for building and repairing roads and so forth. The second is the electric jack hammer, these are a more common solution for most construction projects. They deliver a more modest impact, but they are more than sufficient to break up concrete, asphalt and all but the toughest rocks. (There are also hydraulic jack hammers, but they generally, are mounted on heavy machinery and not for hand held use).
Hilti Electric Jack Hammer vs Air Jack hammer
Benefits of an Electric Jack Hammer over Pneumatic.
The benefits of using an electric jack hammer begin with the lighter weight of the tool. They are generally made with a hardened plastic or thin metal casing. They are generally a smaller design making them much more portable than their pneumatic cousins. All jack hammers are by the nature of what they do fairly loud. The electric jack hammer models are however, significantly quieter. Also, you don’t have the additional noise of the air compressor running in the background. Just the air compressor itself can be of a size where it has to be carried around with pick-up or a flatbed truck. For these reasons, electric jack hammers are ideal for smaller projects, or in residential areas where there are strict considerations for noise levels during the day.
Electric Jack Hammer Uses.
Electric jack hammers, can be a cost effective investment for contractors or individuals. If you are intending to break up rock and concrete, or remove tiles, they are invaluable.

I need an electric to break up a 60year old chimney and fireplace hearth of poured hand mixed concrete. Floor joists are cemented in place in the fireplace foundation are being twisted as the fireplace settles, and we need to get them loose. I am looking to rent and any advice on size and brand to try to get would be helpful.
Thanks , Jim
Hi Jim, Sorry about the late reply. Its a bit hard to say without really seeing it, but I would probably go with the Bosch 11335K. I have used it to tear up a basement floor and it worked pretty well for that. I found that it was not too heavy to move about but still had the power to break through 5 inches of concrete without too much trouble. You can rent them from Home Depot for about $50 per day. Good luck with it.
